Arlesey Town

Taxi from Arlesey

The small industrial town of Arlesey is located near the border of Hertfordshire and lies approximately 3 miles north west of Letchworth Garden City and Biggleswade approximately to the south.

The railway station in Arlesey provides services to Peterborough and London.   A range of shops, schools and recreational facilities can also be found in the town.  Arlesey also has its own football ground.
Arlesey's major employer used to be Fairfield Hospital, originally known as Stotfold  Three Counties Asylum.  The hospital closed in 1999.  The main building of the hospital along with the water towers, which are Grade II listed, have been restored with the interior converted into flats.  This has been renamed Fairfield Hall.   A health club has also been built on the site which has the name Ballantyne's.  The grounds around the hospital  have also undergone major development and is now a village called Fairfield Park.  The clay used in the bricks at the hospital came from the pits at Arlesey.  Some of the clay pits were used by the former brick works, which was also a major employer in Arlesey and produced the Arlesey white bricks which can be seen in many of the local buildings.  These clay pits are now used as lakes, one being the Blue Lagoon, which is used for sailing and fishing clubs..  This lake, although being a private one, vast amounts of people actually swim there.
