Shefford is a small town in the Bedfordshire. It has two rivers running through, namely the River Flit and the River Hit. The River Flit runs from a town called Flitwick and is joined by the Rivel Ivel on the edge of Shefford. The Rivel Ivel enventually joins the River Ouse, north of Sandy. The name of Shefford is derived from sheep-ford, where it had been a sheep market with ford crossings over the two rivers, which ran through the town. The town has its own local scout group and a Army cadet force based at Chicksands.
Chicksands used to be an American based camp, but now is an Army Intelligence Corps base. In 1312 a Royal Charter was granted to Shefford that an annual fair be held. This happens every year and is held in October where the high street is closed for the duration of the fair. The poet Robert Bloomfield who's famous book "The Farmers Boy" came to live in Shefford and a secondary school was named after him, which has now become an Academy school.
